The main tradeoff

24 lb is the manufacturer-stated two-pack arrangement; the bare body is 15.7 lb, not the carried set weight. No BRA 280 runtime is listed in the current AP chart. Reference-only status is not a recall finding.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does a two-battery backpack kit need to meet 571 CFM?

The BRA 280 manual lists 571 CFM with blower unit and the U.S. Set page includes two batteries. The reference BRA is excluded; eligible EGO LB6000-family backpacks are a different platform that also clear the airflow floor.

If two batteries in one package matter more than backpack carry, can a stronger handheld kit qualify?

Yes. EGO LB8803-2 is a two-battery 880-CFM handheld kit; it is a separate battery system and handling plan, not a BRA-compatible alternative. This BRA 280 Set remains reference-only.

Can I set a 15.7-pound bare-body ceiling for a backpack blower?

The manual gives 15.7 lb for the HMI-equipped BRA 280.0 B without batteries. Eligible EGO LB6000-series backpack bodies are listed at 12.5 lb bare, but their batteries and output profile differ.

The BRA 280 Set is defined by both its output and its two-pack box

STIHL's U.S. BRA 280 Set part BA110115951US includes the backpack blower, two AP 300 S batteries, an AL 301 fast charger and a user manual. That is the important distinction from the BRA 280 Unit Only package, which includes no battery or charger. The page says the blower uses sequential discharge and identifies AP 300.0 P as its current recommended battery. The owner manual for the BRA 280 family says AP 300 S is the minimum for unrestricted use. The older manual name and current page recommendation should be kept visible when planning a battery pool; do not assume every older AP pack is an equal substitute.

The official page advertises a 24-pound weight with two AP 300 S batteries. The shared manual gives a 15.7-pound body-only weight for the HMI-equipped BRA 280.0 B; that manual variant best matches the page's HMI Premium Plus and length-adjustable-tube description. The page itself sells the retail product simply as BRA 280, so the exact U.S. SKU remains the shopper identity here. The set's batteries make the 24-pound statement more relevant than a body-only comparison, but it is still a manufacturer figure, not a weighed unit from our own testing.

The manual lists 26 N of blowing force, 192 mph maximum and 161 mph average air velocity. Its airflow specifications are 571 CFM with the blower unit and 792 CFM “without blowing unit.” Use 571 CFM as the assembled-blower comparison line. These are published figures with different measurement configurations, not independent performance tests; neither one predicts how long it will take to move wet leaves from a particular lawn.

What changes against the BRA 200?

The BRA 280's useful difference is not merely a higher number. It adds the BRA 280.0 B manual's handle-mounted operator interface, battery-state indication, selectable power levels, power hold, Bluetooth connection and quick tube-length adjustment. STIHL also documents Boost on the family; prolonged Boost operation reduces battery runtime. The BRA 200 is simpler and publishes 21 N/527 CFM with a 15.2-pound bare body, while the HMI-equipped BRA 280 body is 15.7 pounds. The 5-pound? No: the bare body difference is only 0.5 pound, and the exact loaded equipment differs. Don't choose based on a full-set weight until you know which packs and accessories are in the load.

The current AP runtime chart does not list BRA 280. A two-battery package can support sequential operation, but a chart estimate for another blower or battery cannot fill that gap. The product page's general claim that this is quiet or powerful is not a runtime result. Keep a spare charging plan if this tool is expected to work through a long route; ask a dealer for a BRA-specific run estimate on the exact batteries you intend to use.

The manual's intended use is blowing leaves, grass and similar material on outdoor surfaces. This machine is not a leaf vacuum or mulcher and no collection bag is supplied. A backpack blower suits repeated area work better than a small patio task for some people, but fit matters: adjust the straps, wear the harness on both shoulders and ensure you can release it promptly. STIHL's instructions call for eye and hearing protection, secure clothing, a clean intake and 50 feet of clearance from bystanders; they warn against directing the stream at people, animals or windows.

When the set fits—and when another package may be easier

Compare this SKU if you need a backpack blower, want two AP 300 S packs and a charger in one exact package, and can use a 26-N / 571-CFM published blower. Requiring only one battery may make a smaller, lighter platform a more practical match. A requirement for a lighter bare backpack body can point toward the EGO LB6000 family, whose 12.5-pound bare blower body is a different 600-CFM system; the STIHL and EGO batteries are not interchangeable. If your must-have is a 26-N value but carry style is flexible, an eligible handheld such as EGO's LB7654 is another distinct alternative. Do not infer it will carry or run like a two-pack backpack.

Questionnaire choices should exclude the BRA 280 Set if you require a handheld blower, a vacuum/mulcher, or a bare body below 15.7 pounds. Requiring two batteries and a charger narrows the package list; it does not tell you that the same batteries will fit other brands. The exact page archive showed the set out of stock, and an exact SKU-specific CPSC status is unresolved. It is therefore retained for technical reading, not as a buying recommendation. The status is not a recall conclusion. Check live availability, SKU and instructions with STIHL before any purchase.
